Tour guides for visitor tours and knowledge transfer

DREAM JOB: DESY GUIDE
Our tour team needs support! In order to continue to make our fascinating research accessible to many people, the Press & Communication team on the Hamburg campus is looking for committed students and PhD students who would like to give our visitor groups an understanding of DESY and its multifaceted research.

WHAT DOES MY JOB AS A TOUR GUIDE LOOK LIKE?
As a guide, you will take over visitor groups and lead them around the campus. Larger groups are split up so that you lead them together with others from the DESY tour guide team. Each person has a maximum of 20 people in tow. Our visitor groups can be very diverse. From a group of schoolchildren on a school trip to Hamburg, to universities and company and leisure groups, to mixed groups on our public tours on Saturdays, our visitors are very diverse. As a DESY guide, you are the face and figurehead of our research centre. We would therefore be delighted if you were well prepared, friendly and enthusiastic enough to give visitors a lively impression of the work at DESY.

BECOME PART OF OUR DESY GUIDES TEAM
As a DESY guide, you are part of a colourful international bunch. Since you will not always work alone, but also sometimes as a duo or at larger events as a team, you will get to know each other well. The PR office will be your second home and you will have a lot of contact with your colleagues from the press department and relation management. Once a month there is a team meeting to discuss work plans and upcoming visits and events.

MY GERMAN IS NOT (YET) THAT GOOD, CAN I STILL BECOME A DESY GUIDE?
Of course it is an advantage if you can speak German. But your German doesn't have to be perfect. We also often have guests from abroad who ask for English-language tours.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

A prerequisite is that you are at least in your third semester of Physics or another STEM subject and, obviously, you are interested in DESY's research projects and topics.

If you enjoy imparting knowledge, like working with people and are interested in DESY's research diversity, this part-time job is just right for you. And don't worry, no master has fallen from the sky yet: you don't have to be a professional to start with us. Already during your first guided tours you will notice how you arouse the interest of the group and how well you can adapt to them. After a comprehensive basic briefing, we offer regular training sessions and visits to our labs for our guides so that you can learn about new developments, research facilities and content. In our media cloud you will find various presentations that you can use for your guided tours or lectures.

HOW DOES THE PAYMENT WORK?
Of course, you should not work for us just for fame and glory. You can find out everything about payment in the Press & Communications department.

I am neither a student nor a phdler, can I still work as a DESY guide?
That is also possible, but you have to discuss it with your group leader beforehand, because in this case we cannot pay you.

HOW DO I APPLY?
Are you interested? Great! Then write to desypr@desy.de or call Lisa Caspar at 3613 and we will arrange an appointment to get to know each other.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE?
There are no limits to your desire and mood. If you find that you can't get enough of telling people about DESY, we also have many other areas where tour guides can make their mark: As a campus reporter on virtual visitor tours, as an exhibition supervisor or helping with many open day activities.
